Physician Assistant Program
What is a Physician Assistant?
Physician Assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Services commonly provided by physician assistants include taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting lab tests, assisting in surgery, and counseling patients. Physician assistants participate in intensive education programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission for Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). Physician assistant education is designed using the medical model that emphasizes basic sciences, clinical sciences and the critical thinking skills required to compliment physician practice. Upon graduation, physician assistants take a national certification examination developed by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants in conjunction with the National Board of Medical Examiners. To maintain their national certification, physician assistants must log 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years and sit for the recertification exam every ten years. Graduation from an accredited physician assistant program and passage of the national certifying exam are required for state licensure.
Our Program's Mission Statement:
The mission of the program is to educate highly-skilled Physician Assistants who:
are capable of providing quality health care
have expertise in the health care needs of the medically underserved
are prepared to critically evaluate, and become leaders in bringing about improvement in the medical and social systems that affect the health of underserved populations
will seek and retain employment as primary care Physician Assistants in medically underserved areas of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) has granted Accreditation-Continued status to the Lock Haven University Physician Assistant Program sponsored by Lock Haven University. Accreditation-Continued is an accreditation status granted when a currently accredited program is in compliance with the ARC-PA Standards.
Accreditation remains in effect until the program closes or withdraws from the accreditation process or until accreditation is withdrawn for failure to comply with the Standards. The approximate date for the next validation review of the program by the ARC-PA will be June 2017. The review date is contingent upon continued compliance with the Accreditation Standards and ARC-PA policy.
Information regarding PA Program Accreditation and ARC-PA can be found at http://www.arc-pa.org/.
Additional Open Houses will be posted here as they are scheduled.
Our Students in the News:
Congratulations to class of 2015 students Hope Weber and Heather Bratton who were recently elected to the Pennsylvania Society of Physician Assistants (PSPA) Student Board of Directors!
Kudos to the Class of 2015 Clearfield Campus Physician Assistant students for doing their part in giving back to their community this past year. The Lock Haven Clearfield Campus Physician Assistant Students organized a “Be The Match” Bone Marrow Drive through the National Marrow Donor Program. The students decided to hold the Bone Marrow Drive because one of their own classmates has been diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia. Even though she is in no current need of a donation, she was their motivation for teaming up with “Be The Match”. The students sold baked goods and raffle tickets, and swabbed about 30 new potential donors to add to the registry on the day of the event.
Our students are not short on compassion. In fact, we are proud to report that the Class of 2015 Coudersport Campus Physician Assistant students organized a food and clothing drive for a family of 10 who lost their home and belongings in a fire last fall.
The Class of 2015 Lock Haven Main Campus students, in conjunction with the other campuses, arranged our annual 5K Fun Walk/Run. This year, the charity supported was Leg Up Farm Therapy Center located in York County, PA. The center is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to working with children who have disabilities and developmental delays.
